Today in history: the passing of Ong Teng Cheong

Here’s to the late President Ong – the People’s President, and our first elected President. His career as NTUC sec-gen was marked by his support of the 1986 shipyard workers’ strike, much to the chagrin of our now-president Tony Tan.

As Singapore’s first elected president, he drew fire from the Government for asking for a list of the reserves he was tasked to protect, and for trying to question the procedure of the sale of government-owned POSB to DBS.

When he died in 2002 he was, arbitrarily, not given a state funeral. Hang the flag today, or tomorrow, for our fallen hero.
